A flashing white light on your Dyson Airwrap means the filter is overdue a clean. That comes straight from Dyson’s own user guide. Clean it properly and the light goes out, the airflow comes back, and the machine stops cutting out mid-style.
If the light turns red, or stays red after you have cleaned it, the filter is no longer the whole story. Dyson’s guidance at that point is to contact them. If your machine is out of warranty, that is where most articles stop being useful and where this one carries on.
TL;DR
- Flashing white light: filter cleaning is overdue. Clean it.
- Red light: a filter problem the machine cannot get past. Clean it, then read on if the light stays red.
- Never use water or chemicals on the filter mesh. Water is for the cage only. This is the step most people get wrong.
- Unplug the machine and let it cool before you touch anything.
- Filters are not covered by the Dyson guarantee. They are listed as a wear part.
- Red light still on after a proper clean: the fault is inside the machine. In warranty, contact Dyson. Out of warranty, we repair Airwraps for a fixed £56.
What the lights are telling you
| What you see | What it means |
| Flashing white | Filter cleaning is overdue |
| Red | A filter problem the machine cannot get past |
| Red, after a full clean | Dyson’s guidance is to contact them. See below. |
| Flashing blue | Ready to connect |
| Constant blue | Connected |
These are the documented meanings for the Airwrap i.d. Older Airwrap generations and the Co-anda 2x do not all carry the same indicators, and the Bluetooth lights only apply to models with connectivity. Check the user guide for your machine, which Dyson publishes for every model.
Why the filter blocks in the first place
The Airwrap pulls a lot of air through a small filter at the base of the handle. Hair, dust and product residue collect in it. Airflow drops, the motor works harder, the machine runs hotter, and the overheat protection cuts in.
You will usually notice the symptoms before you notice the light. Weaker airflow. The machine stopping partway through styling. A handle that runs hotter than it used to.
Fine hair and heavy product use both fill filters faster. If you style most days, expect to clean it more often than someone who uses it at weekends.
Before you start
Unplug the Airwrap from the mains and let it cool down completely. Dyson’s guide is explicit about this. The barrels, round brushes and Dryer+Flyaway smoother all get hot in use, and the handle holds heat for a while after you switch off.
You need the filter cleaning brush that came in the box. Nothing else. If you have lost it, Dyson sells replacements, and it is worth getting one rather than improvising with something abrasive. A scratched filter mesh is not repairable.
The six steps
This is Dyson’s documented procedure, not our interpretation of it.
- Brush the filter cage while it is still on the machine. Slide the filter cleaning brush over the cable and onto the filter cage. Work it round the cage using a rotating motion.
- Take the cage off. Pull the filter cage downwards, onto the cable. Gently pull it open and slide it off.
- Wash the cage. Under a warm running tap. The cage only.
- Dry it properly. Shake out the excess water, then leave it to dry naturally. Do not put it back damp, and do not speed things up on a radiator.
- Clean the mesh with the brush, dry. The filter mesh stays on the machine. Use the cleaning brush with rotating and vertical motions. Do not use water or chemicals on the mesh.
- Put the cage back. Slide it onto the cable and twist until it snaps into place.
Step five is where people go wrong. It is a natural instinct to run the whole thing under the tap, and Dyson’s guide says not to. If you have already done it, let everything dry out completely before you plug the machine back in.
How often
Dyson’s position is that the machine tells you. When the white LED starts flashing, cleaning is overdue.
Waiting for the light is fine, but it is the minimum rather than the ideal. A quick brush of the cage every few weeks keeps airflow up and the motor cooler, and it takes about a minute. Regular styling and heavy product use both shorten the interval.
The filter is not covered by your guarantee
Worth knowing before you ring anyone. Dyson’s guarantee terms cover repair or replacement where a machine is defective due to faulty materials or workmanship. They specifically exclude normal wear and tear, and the examples Dyson gives include filters.
The guarantee also excludes accidental damage, misuse, and damage caused by non-genuine parts. You will need proof of purchase before any work is carried out under it.
So a blocked filter is your job, in warranty or out of it. It is also the easiest fault on this machine to fix, which is the good news.
When the light stays on after cleaning
Here is the honest version, and it is the part missing from almost every other guide on this subject.
If you have cleaned the cage and the mesh properly, dried everything, reassembled it correctly, and the red light is still on, the filter is not your problem any more. Dyson’s own instruction at this point is to contact their helpline. That is the right first call if your machine is still in warranty.
Out of warranty, you have three options and only one of them is much good.
Buy a replacement. The most expensive answer to a fault that may well be minor.
Live with it. Machines that cut out mid-style tend to get worse rather than better, and a machine running hot is not something to leave.
Have it repaired. An out-of-warranty repair costs a fraction of a replacement, and it keeps a working machine out of the waste stream.
Check your guarantee status first. If you are covered, use the cover.
What a repair costs
We repair Dyson Airwraps for a fixed £56, covering the Airwrap Co-anda2x, Airwrap i.d. and Airwrap Origin. That is the price on our service page and it is the price you pay.
Every repair carries a 90-day guarantee. We collect from you and return to you anywhere in the UK, and you get updates while the machine is with us. We are out-of-warranty specialists. If your machine is still covered by Dyson, use that first. We will tell you if that is the case rather than take the job.
Repair or replace
Some things are worth saying plainly. If the fault is a blocked filter, do not pay anyone to fix it. Clean it yourself using the steps above. Ten minutes, no cost. If the machine has been dropped hard or the casing is cracked, stop using it and get it looked at before you plug it in again.
If the machine is old, has had several faults, and the repair cost is approaching the price of a new one, replacing it is the sensible call. We would tell you that, rather than take the job.
Everything in between is worth repairing. A working Airwrap that stays working is better for you, and better than another appliance in landfill.
Fault finder
| Symptom | Most likely cause | What to do |
| Flashing white light | Filter cleaning overdue | Follow the six steps above |
| Cutting out mid-style | Restricted airflow, overheat protection engaging | Clean the filter, check nothing is blocking the inlet |
| Weak airflow | Blocked filter or blocked attachment | Clean the filter, pull hair out of the brushes |
| Red light, filter not yet cleaned | Filter problem | Clean the filter properly, mesh included |
| Red light after a full clean | Internal fault | In warranty, contact Dyson. Out of warranty, book a repair |
| No power at all | Mains supply, plug fuse, cable or internal fault | Check the socket and plug fuse, then book a repair |
Questions we get asked
Can I wash the whole filter under the tap?
No. The cage washes under a warm tap. The mesh is cleaned dry, with the brush only. Dyson’s guide is specific about this.
Does the Dyson Airwrap have a battery?
No. The Airwrap is mains powered and runs from the cable. People search for Airwrap battery replacement fairly often, and it is usually a mix-up with a cordless Dyson hair tool. If your Airwrap has no power, look at the mains supply, the plug fuse, the cable, or an internal fault.
Is the filter covered under warranty?
No. Dyson’s guarantee terms list filters as a wear part, alongside fuses and batteries, and wear parts are excluded.
My filter light came back on a week after cleaning. Is that normal?
Not usually. Check that the mesh was cleaned as well as the cage, and that the cage went back on fully. If it keeps returning quickly after a proper clean, have the machine looked at.
Is it worth repairing an Airwrap?
Usually, yes. A fixed-price repair is a fraction of a replacement and the machine keeps working. The exception is a machine that has already had several faults.
Do I have to be near you to get it repaired?
No. We collect and return across the UK. Our workshop is in Merseyside, and you do not need to be.
