Is your steam iron back-to-school ready?

A kitchen with important wooden cabinets and appliances.

Read the troubleshooting section of any air fryer manual, and you will notice something. Most of it is about cooking, soggy chips, uneven browning, white smoke, and food that needs turning halfway.

The moment a real fault appears, the advice stops. Ninja tells you to ring customer service. Tefal tells you to take it to an approved service centre. Philips points you at a helpline. All three are correct, and none of them helps much once your guarantee has run out.

This guide covers what those manuals document, what to check before you decide the machine is broken, and what your options actually are when the manufacturer has said “contact us” and you are paying for it yourself.

TL;DR

  • Not heating but the fan runs is the most common real fault. Check the drawer is fully home first.
  • Nothing at all means the socket, the plug fuse, or the drawer switch before it means the machine.
  • White smoke is usually fat in the drawer, not a fault.
  • A worn non-stick coating is not a repair. It is a replacement basket.
  • A damaged cable means stop using it. Every manufacturer says the same.
  • Manufacturer troubleshooting stops at “contact us”. That is the point where an out-of-warranty repair becomes the sensible option.
  • Out-of-warranty repairs start at £55, with UK collection and return and a 90-day guarantee.

Before you decide it is broken

Four checks, in order, that between them account for many air fryers written off too early.

Is the drawer fully closed? Nearly every air fryer has a safety switch that stops the unit heating unless the drawer or basket is firmly closed. Tefal’s instructions advise you check the lid is securely closed before anything else. Ninja also advises that incomplete cooking can be caused by an open drawer. Push it in firmly and try again.

Does the socket work? Philips lists an unplugged appliance and an overloaded outlet as the first two causes of an Airfryer that will not switch on, which tells you how often it is the cause. It is recommended that you plug something else in to rule out the issue.

Have you changed the plug fuse? This is the most common reason a mains appliance suddenly does nothing. It costs pennies.

Is the display just asleep? Ninja documents a black screen as standby rather than a fault. Press the power button.

Fault 1: the fan runs, but nothing gets hot

This is the most common, genuine fault, and the one that brings most air fryers to a workshop. The fan and the heating element are driven separately, so a machine can circulate air perfectly while producing no heat at all. That is why it sounds like it is working.

Rule out the drawer switch, socket and fuse. Beyond that, Tefal’s own instructions are blunt: if the engines are running and no heat is generated, the machine needs a service centre. There is nothing safe or sensible for an owner to check inside a sealed unit containing a mains heating element.

Fault 2: no power at all

Work outwards from the cheapest cause.

  • Try a different socket, and avoid extension leads and multi-way adapters while testing.
  • Change the fuse in the plug.
  • Check the drawer is fully seated. Some models show nothing at all until it is.
  • Press and hold the power button. Some units wake from standby rather than switching on.
  • Inspect the cable along its whole length.

If all five are clear, the fault is internal. Air fryers draw a lot of current, and internal protection devices exist precisely to fail before anything worse happens.

Fault 3: white smoke

This is usually not a fault, which is the good news. Philips documents that this is caused by fatty ingredients releasing oil, greasy residue left from previous cooking, breading that has not been pressed on firmly and is burning loose and liquids splattering onto the element.

Here are four remedies that prevent white smoke: pour excess oil out of the drawer, clean the machine properly, including the element area, press breading on firmly and pat wet food dry before it goes in.

Fault 4: black smoke

This is usually an internal fault. Black smoke, a burning smell from the machine rather than the food, or smoke with nothing cooking are all different. Switch it off at the socket and get it checked.

Fault 5: rattles, grinding and fan noise

Air fryers are not quiet, so what matters is change. A new rattle is often something loose in the drawer or a crisper plate not seated properly. Check that before assuming the worst.

A grinding or scraping noise from the body of the machine is the fan, and that is a repair rather than a fix. Tefal’s advises having abnormal noise assessed at a service centre rather than continuing to use the machine. Fans that are failing tend to take other things with them.

Fault 6: uneven or slow cooking

Check the loading before the machine. Ninja’s manual is specific: ingredients should be in a single layer without overlap, and shaken halfway through for even results. Tefal similarly advises that food should be cut to uniform sizes. Overloading is the most common cause of food that comes out unevenly done, and it looks exactly like a machine losing power.

If the machine is loaded correctly and food is still taking noticeably longer than it used to, that is a genuine change and worth investigating. Heating elements degrade. So do thermostats.

Fault 7: the non-stick coating is coming off

This is not a repair, and worth being straight about. Philips documents small peeling spots inside the pan as damage caused by knocks and scratches, usually from lowering the basket in carelessly or from metal utensils. Tefal warns that salting food during cooking scratches the bowl and advises to salt at the end.

Once a coating has gone, the answer is a replacement drawer or basket from the manufacturer, not a repair. It is also not usually a reason to replace the whole machine.

Fault 8: cable damage

Every manufacturer says the same thing and they are right. Tefal’s instruction is to stop using the appliance immediately if the power cord is damaged and have it replaced by an approved repair centre. Look for splits, kinks, exposed conductor or a section that has gone stiff. Do not tape it and carry on. This is a high-current mains appliance. Cable damage is repairable and it is not a reason to scrap a working machine.

Fault 9: error codes and messages

There is less here than you might expect, and it is worth knowing before you go looking. Ninja’s AF400UK manual documents a single message. An “E” on the display means the unit is not functioning properly and to contact customer service. There is no diagnostic breakdown behind it.

The Philips HD9200 manual contains no error codes at all. Its troubleshooting table covers cooking outcomes and one power question. Philips does publish error code guidance for some model families on its support site, organised by prefix rather than by fault. Tefal points owners to the manual for their specific model and says a persistent error code needs an approved service agent.

So an error code on an air fryer generally means one thing: the machine has detected a fault it cannot describe to you. Brand-specific detail is in the Ninja guide.

What you can fix yourself

  • Seat the drawer properly.
  • Change the plug fuse.
  • Try a different socket.
  • Clean the drawer, crisper plate and element area of grease.
  • Load food in a single layer and shake halfway.
  • Replace a worn basket or drawer with a manufacturer part.

If one of those solves it, you have saved a repair bill and we would rather you did.

When to stop and get it looked at

An air fryer is a sealed mains appliance with a heating element that runs at high temperatures. This sets a firm limit on home repair.

Immediately stop if the cable or plug is damaged, if the casing is cracked, if there is a smell of burning from the machine, if it trips your electrics, or if it heats when the drawer is out. Do not open the casing. Every manufacturer says the same and they are not being precious about it.

Repair or replace

The honest version.

A worn non-stick basket is a parts purchase, not a repair and not a new machine.

A machine that will not heat, has a failing fan, or has cable damage is worth repairing. These are established faults with established fixes. Our air fryer repairs start at £55, which is a fraction of what a comparable replacement costs.

A cheap machine that has had several faults, or one where the repair approaches the price of a new one, is the case for replacing. We will say so rather than take the job. Where it can be kept going, that is one less appliance in landfill.

Where the manufacturer sends you, and what happens next

Every manual ends the same way. Contact customer service, take it to an approved service centre or speak to an approved repair agent. Inside your guarantee, do exactly that. It is the cheapest route and it is what you paid for.

Outside it, you are paying, and the manufacturer route is not usually the cheapest way to pay. That is where we come in. Our air fryer repairs start at £55, we collect from you and return to you anywhere in the UK, and every repair carries a 90-day guarantee.

What you pay depends on the fault and the parts involved, which is why it is a starting price rather than a flat one. You do not need a local repair shop, which is just as well, because most people no longer have one.

Questions we get asked

Why is my air fryer not heating up but the fan works?

The fan and heating element run separately, so one can work while the other does not. Check the drawer is fully seated first, since the safety switch produces exactly this symptom. If it is home and there is still no heat, it needs a repair.

Is it worth repairing an air fryer?

For a mid-range or premium machine with a single fault, usually yes. Our repairs start at £55, which is well under the price of a comparable replacement. For a cheap machine that has already had several problems, usually not, and we will tell you so.

Can I fix an air fryer myself?

You can seat the drawer, change the plug fuse, try another socket and clean it properly. Beyond that it is a sealed mains appliance with a heating element, and every manufacturer tells you not to open it.

Why is my air fryer smoking?

Usually fat. Excess oil in the drawer, greasy residue from previous cooking, loose breading burning, or wet food splattering onto the element. Black smoke or a burning smell from the machine itself is different and means stop.

Can the non-stick coating be repaired?

No. Once it has gone, the answer is a replacement drawer or basket from the manufacturer. That is usually far cheaper than a new machine.

What does the E error mean on my Ninja?

Ninja’s manual says it means the unit is not functioning properly and to contact customer service. There is no more detail behind it. The Ninja guide covers what that means in practice.

Do I need an air fryer repair shop near me?

No. We collect and return across the UK, so wherever you are, the machine reaches us and comes back. Our workshop is in Merseyside, and you do not need to be.
