If you style most days, your Airwrap needs more attention than the machine asks for. Dyson’s guidance is to clean the filter when the white light starts flashing, which is a minimum rather than a routine.
Waiting for a warning light can mean using the machine with a restricted filter for longer than necessary. None of what follows is difficult, and all of it costs nothing.

The filter is the whole game
Most Airwrap complaints trace back to airflow. The machine draws air through a small filter in the base of the handle, and hair, dust and product build up there steadily.
A restricted filter makes the machine work harder, run hotter, and eventually shut itself down mid-style. It also puts avoidable load on the motor over months and years.
Dyson’s procedure is six steps and takes about ten minutes. The step people skip is the mesh, which is cleaned dry with the supplied brush and never with water. The full method is here.
Between full cleans, a quick pass over the cage with the brush takes under a minute and keeps the interval long.

That table is a starting point built on how the filter loads, not a Dyson specification. If your light comes on sooner, clean sooner.
Attachments need clearing too
Barrels and brushes collect hair around the base where you cannot easily see it. A partly blocked attachment feels exactly like a machine losing power, and it is one of the more common false alarms.
Pull the hair out of the brushes regularly and wipe the barrels and the smoother with a soft, damp cloth. Dyson notes that some attachments need occasional cleaning, and the ones that touch hair need it most.
Clean the collar where the attachment clips on, too. Product build-up there is what makes attachments start slipping off.
Heat, and letting it cool
The barrels, round brushes and smoother all get hot in use, and the handle holds heat afterwards. Dyson’s manuals are explicit that you unplug the machine and let it cool before cleaning.
The same applies to putting it away. A hot machine going straight into a closed case, or a hot barrel resting against something, is asking for damage that was easy to avoid.
Give it a few minutes. Use the cool shot at the end of styling if your model has one, which helps the machine and your hair at the same time.
The cable is the part most likely to fail
Not the motor, not the heater. The cable.
It gets bent hard where it meets the handle, wrapped tightly for storage, and pulled from the socket by the lead rather than the plug. All three do damage that accumulates.
- Unplug by the plug, never by pulling the cable.
- Store the cable in a loose loop rather than wound tight around the handle.
- Do not bend it sharply as it enters the handle.
- Check it now and then for splits, stiff sections or exposed wire.
If the outer sheath is damaged, you must stop using the machine. It is a mains appliance. Cable damage is repairable, and there is no reason to replace the whole thing.
Product build-up
Heat protectants, sprays and serums are part of using a styler, and residue from all of them ends up in the machine.
Let product dry before you start styling where you can. Wipe the barrels down after use rather than letting residue bake on. Keep product away from the air inlet at the base of the handle.
Heavy product use is one of the reliable ways to shorten the interval between filter cleans, so if you use a lot, clean more often.
Storage
Somewhere dry, cool and not the bathroom shelf directly above a running shower. Dyson’s safety instructions advise the machine is not to be used near baths, showers or basins containing water, and the same common sense applies to where it lives.
The presentation case is fine once everything has cooled. Attachments stored loose in a drawer pick up dust that then goes through your hair and into the filter.
Warning signs worth acting on
Machines give notice before they fail. These are the ones worth doing something about rather than waiting out.
