Is your steam iron back-to-school ready?

Tefal’s troubleshooting is the most direct and shortest among air fryer brands. Tefal’s troubleshooting is the most direct of any air fryer brand, and also the shortest. Appliance will not turn on: check the outlet, check the lid is closed, press the button firmly. Abnormal noise: approved service centre. Not heating: approved service centre. Damaged cord: stop using it.

Three of those four end at a service centre, and Tefal is explicit that you should not attempt to repair the appliance yourself. Correct advice, and not much comfort once your guarantee has run out. This guide covers what Tefal documents across the Easy Fry and ActiFry ranges, the checks worth doing first, and what happens when the manufacturer route stops being the cheap option.

TL;DR

  • Will not turn on? Tefal recommends checking the outlet, checking the lid is closed and pressing the button firmly.
  • Lid or drawer not properly closed stops the machine on most Tefal models.
  • Not heating with the fan running goes to a service centre in Tefal’s own guidance.
  • Do not salt food during cooking. Tefal says it scratches the bowl. Salt at the end.
  • Do not add oil to frozen chips. They already contain enough.

What Tefal documents advise

From Tefal’s own instructions for use. Their words, condensed.

Problem  Tefal’s guidance
Appliance will not turn on  Verify the outlet works by plugging in another device, ensure the lid is securely closed, then press the power button firmly. If unresolved, contact an approved service centre. Do not attempt self-repair.
Abnormal noise  If an engine malfunction is suspected, take the unit to an authorised service centre for checking.
Appliance not heating  Engines running but no heat generated requires service centre evaluation.
Damaged power cord  Stop using immediately. Have it replaced by an approved repair centre to avoid danger.
Error codes  Codes are listed in the manual for your model. A persistent code needs assessment by an approved service agent.
Food not cooking evenly  Cut all pieces to uniform sizes.
Soggy or non-crispy chips  Do not add oil to frozen chips; they contain enough. Wash and dry fresh potatoes thoroughly. Use the right chip thickness and oil quantity.
Scratched bowl  Do not salt food during cooking. Salt only at the end.

Four of those eight are cooking advice. The other four all end in the same place.

The Tefal air fryer range

Tefal publishes instructions for each model, which can be found on the rating label underneath, so the model code matters. The current UK line splits broadly into the Easy Fry family, including the Dual Easy Fry and Easy Fry & Grill machines, and the older ActiFry range with its distinctive stirring paddle. The ActiFry Genius XL still draws steady search interest, suggesting plenty are still in kitchens and still worth keeping there.  We repair Tefal air fryers, and the Tefal air fryer repair page covers what we take on.

Start with the lid

This is the Tefal-specific check, and it is first in their own list for a reason. Tefal machines will not run when the lid or drawer is not properly closed. This is the safety interlock. A machine that appears completely dead is often a system that does not think it is shut. Tefal recommends opening it fully and closing it again, firmly, rather than nudging it. On the ActiFry models with a stirring paddle, check the paddle is fitted correctly too. A paddle sitting proud can stop the lid seating.

When it will not turn on

Tefal’s sequence, in order, with the fuse added because it belongs there.

  1. Plug something else into the socket to prove the socket works.
  2. Close the lid or drawer securely.
  3. Press the power button firmly rather than tapping it.
  4. Change the fuse in the plug.
  5. Check the cable along its whole length.

If the issue is not resolved after following the above, you must contact an approved service centre and not attempt a repair yourself. The machine runs a heating element at a high temperature from the mains, and the casing is not meant to come off.

When the fan runs, but nothing heats

Tefal describes this precisely: engines running, no heat generated. They answer that it needs evaluating. Before you do this, it is recommended that you rule out the socket, fuse and lid, as they can cause issues with the interlock in certain models.

If the above ruling works as it should, it is often caused by an internal fault. The heating circuit on these machines includes protection devices designed to fail safely, and diagnosing which has gone is a workshop job rather than a kitchen one.

Noise

Tefal treats abnormal noise as a possible engine malfunction and recommends you switch it off immediately and have it checked. Fans and motors give warning before they fail, and a machine dealt with early is much cheaper to repair than one run until it stops. Before you book anything, check nothing is loose in the basket and, on ActiFry models, that the paddle is seated properly.

Looking after the bowl

Tefal advises adding salt to food at the end, not whilst cooking, as salt scratches the bowl, and once the coating is scratched it does not come back. Do not add oil to frozen chips; they already contain enough. The extra oil ends up as residue in the machine and causes smoke.

A scratched or worn bowl is a replacement part rather than a repair, and a far cheaper outcome than a new machine.

Getting better results

What looks like a failing machine can often be caused by how it’s loaded. Cut food evenly, dry fresh potatoes thoroughly, and follow Tefal’s guidance on chip size and oil quantity. If cooking times are genuinely increasing with the same load, it’s worth investigating.

Out of warranty

Providing that your Tefal air fryer is still under guarantee, using an approved service centre is usually the best and cheapest option. Once the guarantee has expired, repairs become chargeable. We repair Tefal air fryers from £55, collect from you and return to you anywhere in the UK, and every repair carries a 90-day guarantee. What you pay depends on the fault and the parts involved.

We are out-of-warranty specialists, and we use the same technicians who carry out repairs for major UK and international brands. If your machine is still covered, we will tell you to use the cover.

Questions we get asked

My Tefal air fryer will not turn on. What should I check?

Tefal’s own order: prove the socket works with another device, make sure the lid is securely closed, and press the power button firmly. Then change the plug fuse. If none of that works, it needs looking at.

Why will my Tefal not start even though it has power?

Most often the lid or drawer is not properly closed. There is a safety interlock, and the machine will not run until it is shut correctly. Open it fully and close it firmly.

My Tefal air fryer is not heating, but the fan works. What now?

Tefal advises that engines that run but with no heat require an evaluation at your local service centre. However, it is advised that you rule out the lid, socket and the fuse before booking a repair.

Why are my chips soggy?

Tefal says not to add oil to frozen chips because they already contain enough, and to wash and dry fresh potatoes thoroughly before cooking. Chip thickness and oil quantity matter too.

Why is the bowl scratched?

Salting food and metal utensils can scratch the bowl. Tefal advises that a worn bowl is a replacement part, not a repair.

Do you repair the ActiFry range?

Provide us with the model code from the rating label, and we will confirm. Get in touch with the code and the symptom.

Can I repair a Tefal air fryer myself?

Tefal advises not to, and they are right. It is a sealed mains appliance with a heating element. However, you can check the lid, socket, fuse and the cable before having the machine evaluated.

Do I need to be near you?

Our workshop is in Merseyside. However, we collect and return across the UK.
