Ninja Air Fryer Faults and Fixes: A Customer Guide

Ninja’s air fryer manuals document one error message. An “E” on the display means the unit is not functioning properly, and the instruction is to ring customer service on 0800 862 0453. 

That is the whole error code system. There is no E1, E2, E3 taxonomy to decode, whatever you may have read elsewhere. When a Ninja shows an error, it is telling you it has found a fault it cannot describe.

Ninja publishes model-specific troubleshooting and instruction booklets, so the first useful step is knowing which machine you have. The model code is on the rating label underneath. 

Ninja also publishes separate troubleshooting guides for each of these on its UK support site. The detail below comes from the AF400UK instruction manual and applies broadly across the dual-zone range. 

What Ninja actually documents 

Worth setting out plainly, because it explains why brand-specific troubleshooting only takes you so far. 

Four of those six are about cooking. Only the “E” message describes a fault, and Ninja’s answer to it is to pick up the phone. 

What to check before you ring anyone 

The Ninja-specific checks first, then the general ones. 

Is the drawer fully inserted?
Ninja’s manual calls this out as a cause of food not cooking properly, and on these machines the drawer also has to be home before the unit will heat. Push it firmly until it seats. On the FlexDrawer and Double Stack models there is more than one drawer to check. 

Is the crisper plate seated?
A plate sitting proud rattles, and it changes how air moves through the drawer. 

Is the display actually off, or asleep?
Ninja documents a black screen as standby. Press power before assuming the machine is dead. 

Have you tried another socket and a new plug fuse?
Between them these account for a lot of appliances that appear to have died. 

Are the vents clear?
Ninja’s safety instructions say not to cover the air vents during operation. A machine pushed back against a wall or under a cupboard runs hot and may cut out. 

When the fan runs but nothing heats
The most common genuine fault on any air fryer (Ninja included). 

The fan and the heating element are driven separately, which is why the machine sounds like it is working. Rule out the drawer first, because a drawer that is not quite home gives exactly this symptom. 

If the drawer is seated, the socket is good and the fuse is new, the fault is internal. Ninja’s manual is clear that the unit should not be used without the removable drawer installed and that there is nothing for an owner to service inside. That is where a repair starts. 

Cleaning, and the mistakes that cause faults 

Ninja’s instructions are specific and worth following, because grease is behind a fair share of avoidable problems. 

• Wipe the main unit with a damp cloth. Never immerse it in water. 

• Drawers and crisper plates are dishwasher safe, though Ninja recommends hand washing to extend their life. 

• Soak stuck residue in warm soapy water rather than scraping it. 

• Do not use metal scouring pads. They take the coating off. 

• Do not cover the air vents while the machine is running. 

• The drawer gets extremely hot in use. Let it cool before cleaning. 

Grease building up around the element is the usual reason a machine starts smoking. That is a cleaning job, not a repair.

Register the machine when you buy it, not when it breaks. The AF400UK manual sets out the registration requirement but does not state the guarantee length, so check your period with Ninja directly rather than taking a figure from an article. 

While you are covered, use the cover. It is the cheapest route and it is what the registration is for.

Why is my Ninja air fryer smoking? 

Usually grease around the heating element from previous cooking. Clean it thoroughly. A burning smell from the machine rather than the food is different and means stop using it. 

Is it worth repairing a Ninja air fryer?
