Philips invented the Airfryer, and its manuals are the most thorough in the category. The HD9200 troubleshooting table covers everything from white smoke to peeling coating, with a documented cause and remedy for each.
There isn’t a single error code listed. That’s useful in itself, because it suggests many Philips air fryer issues are caused by how the machine is being used or loaded, rather than by a fault with the appliance.
This guide covers what Philips documents, what to check first, and where the line falls between a fix you can do and a repair you cannot.

What Philips documents

Note what is not in that table. There is no entry for a machine that will not heat, no entry for fan noise, and no error codes. Those are the faults Philips expects to handle rather than talk you through.
The smoke question, answered properly
It is the most searched Philips Airfryer problem and the one most often mistaken for a fault.
Philips lists four causes. Each cause is about what has been inside the machine. Fatty food releasing oil into the pan, greasy residue left from previous cooking, sitting where it gets hot, breading that has not been pressed on firmly and is lifting into the element and wet food splattering.
The remedies follow. Drain excess between batches, clean the machine thoroughly, including around the element where residue collects. Press coatings on firmly. Pat wet food dry.
Black smoke, or smoke with nothing in the machine, or a burning smell coming from the body rather than the food, is a different matter. Switch off at the socket and stop using it.
When it will not switch on
Philips’ own order is cheaper than most people expect.
- Check the plug is properly inserted in the wall socket.
- Try a different socket, particularly if several appliances share one.
- Change the fuse in the plug.
- Check that the basket and pan are fully seated. Many models will not run otherwise.
- Inspect the cable along its length for damage.
If all five are clear, the fault is internal, and the machine needs looking at. Philips’ instruction never to immerse the appliance in water or rinse it under a tap is a reminder of what you are dealing with.
When the fan runs, but nothing heats
Philips does not cover this in the HD9200 manual, which tells you it is not an owner-fixable fault.
The fan and heating element operate separately, so the machine can sound normal even when it isn’t heating. First, make sure the basket and pan are fully seated, as the safety interlock can cause this issue. Secondly, check the socket and fuse.
If the issue is not resolved, it needs a repair. Philips publishes support content for this fault on its website rather than in the manual, and the outcome there is the same: it goes to someone who can open it.
The coating, and how to keep it
Philips is unusually direct about this, and it is worth taking seriously.
Small peeling spots inside the pan are caused by the coating being touched or scratched, most often by the basket being dropped in rather than lowered and by metal utensils.
Once the coating has gone, it cannot be repaired. You will need a replacement pan or basket from Philips, which costs a fraction of a new machine. However, you can prevent this by lowering the basket properly and keeping metal away from it.
Error codes on Philips Airfryers
The HD9200 manual contains no error codes on Philllips Airfryers. Philips does publish error code guidance on its support site for other model families, organised by prefix rather than by symptom: codes beginning with E, codes beginning 0x, codes beginning A, and a specific E10 on the NA46x range.
Check the support page for further guidance. You can find your model number on the rating label underneath the machine. A code that keeps returning after a power cycle is a fault, not a glitch, and it needs someone to look at the machine.
Cleaning, as Philips specifies it
- Let the machine cool completely before cleaning.
- Dishwasher, or hot water with a non-abrasive sponge.
- Soak stubborn residue for ten to fifteen minutes rather than scraping.
- Never immerse the appliance in water or rinse it under the tap.
- Keep metal utensils away from the coated surfaces.
- Always put ingredients in the basket, so they cannot touch the heating elements.
- Never fill the pan with oil. Philips flags this as a fire hazard.
Repair or replace
Philips Airfryers sit across a wide price range, and that changes the arithmetic.
On the larger XXL and dual-basket machines, a repair starting at £55 is cheaper than replacing and worth doing for any single established fault. On the smallest models the sums are tighter, and at that point, we would tell you not to bother.
A worn coating is neither. It is a replacement pan or basket, bought from Philips, and it is the cheapest outcome of the three.
