Is your steam iron back-to-school ready?

Dyson uses two warning lights on the Airwrap to flag common issues. A flashing white light indicates the filter needs cleaning, while a red light indicates a more serious fault that the machine cannot resolve on its own.

Both are documented in Dyson’s own manuals, going back to the original HS01. This guide covers what those lights mean, the faults that do not trigger a light at all, what you can fix at home in five minutes, and where the line sits between a simple job and one for a workshop.

We repair Airwraps out of warranty for a fixed price. That gives us a reason to be straight with you about which faults are worth paying for and which are not.

TL;DR

  • Cutting out mid-style is usually restricted airflow. Clean the filter first.
  • Flashing white light means the filter is overdue. Red light means a filter problem the machine cannot clear.
  • Red light that survives a proper clean is an internal fault. Dyson’s own instruction at that point is to contact them.
  • The Airwrap has no battery. It runs from the mains, so no power means the socket, the plug fuse, the cable, or something internal.
  • Attachments that will not stay on are usually the attachment, not the machine.
  • Out of warranty and stuck? We repair Airwraps for a fixed £56, with a 90-day guarantee and UK collection and return.

Which Airwrap do you have

The model matters, because the older generations are the ones most likely to be out of warranty and worth repairing rather than replacing. The model number is on the rating label on the handle.

Model code  Known as  Notes
HS01  The original Airwrap  Documented in Dyson’s HS01 operating manual. Same white and red light behaviour as the current machines.
HS02  Complete Long Origin  Model code from retail listings rather than a Dyson document. Confirm before publishing.
HS05  Complete Long  Dyson publishes the 308C manual family for this generation.
HS08  Airwrap i.d. Straight+Wavy  The 308F manuals cover the i.d. Model code from retail listings.
HS09  Airwrap Co-anda 2x  Confirmed in Dyson’s own EU compliance documentation for the Co-anda 2x.

We repair the Airwrap Co-anda2xAirwrap i.d. and Airwrap Origin. If yours is older than those and not listed, ask us.

What the lights mean

What you see  What it means
Flashing white  Filter cleaning is overdue
Red  A filter problem the machine cannot get past
Red, after a full clean  Dyson’s guidance is to contact them. Internal fault.
Flashing blue  Ready to connect. Bluetooth models only.
Constant blue  Connected. Bluetooth models only.

The white and red behaviour is consistent from the HS01 through to the current machines. The blue lights only appear on models with connectivity, so if yours has none, that is not a fault.

Fault 1: cutting out partway through styling

The most common complaint, and the one most likely to have a free fix. The Airwrap moves a lot of air through a small filter in the base of the handle. Hair, dust and product build up in it. Airflow drops, the motor works harder, temperatures rise, and the machine’s protection shuts it down before anything is damaged. Cleaning the filter properly clears it.

Do the full clean, not a quick brush. Dyson’s procedure has six steps, and the one people skip is the filter mesh, which is cleaned dry with the brush and never with water. Our step by step filter guide covers it.

If it still cuts out after a proper clean, treat it as an internal fault and move to fault 3.

Fault 2: weak airflow, or not getting hot enough

Start with the same filter. Restricted airflow causes weak flow before eventually shutting down. Then check the attachment. Barrels and brushes collect hair around the base, and a partly blocked attachment feels exactly like a failing machine. Afterwards, pull the hair out and try again.

If the filter is clean, the attachment is clear, and the machine still runs cool or weak, the fault is inside. Heating and airflow are controlled by components that are not user-serviceable, and there is nothing safe to check yourself on a mains appliance that runs at styling temperatures.

Fault 3: a red light that will not clear

This is the fault worth understanding properly, because it is where nearly every other guide stops.  Dyson’s manuals say the same thing across generations: if the red LED lights and the filter has already been cleaned, contact the Dyson Helpline. That is the correct first move if your machine is in warranty.

If your product’s warranty has expired, the helpline is not much help, because you are then looking at Dyson’s own repair or replacement pricing. That is the point at which an independent out-of-warranty repair makes sense. We cover costs in our Airwrap repair cost guide.

Before you conclude the filter is clear, check two things people miss. Clean the mesh and cage, and make sure the cage is fully seated and twisted until it snaps home.

Fault 4: attachments that will not stay attached

Usually the attachment rather than the machine. Barrels and brushes clip on and take a lot of handling. The fitting wears, and hair and product build up on the collar. Clean the collar, check the fitting for damage, and try a different attachment on the same machine. If a second attachment holds, you have found your answer.

If every attachment is loose on one machine, the fitting on the machine end is the problem, and that is a workshop job.

Fault 5: noise from the handle

The Airwrap has a high-speed motor, so it is never silent. What matters is change. A new rattle, grinding or whining that was not there before is worth acting on rather than ignoring. So is a machine that has become noticeably louder over a few weeks. Motors give warning before they fail, and a machine caught early is a cheaper repair than one run to destruction.

Clean the filter first, because a struggling machine sounds different from a healthy one. If the noise survives the clean, book it in.

Fault 6: cable and plug problems

The cable takes the worst of daily use, particularly where it meets the handle. It gets bent, wrapped, yanked from the socket and stored tightly coiled. Look for splits, kinks, exposed wire or a section that has gone stiff. Any damage to the outer sheath on a mains appliance means stop using it. Do not tape it and carry on.

Cable damage is repairable, and you don’t need to replace the machine.

Fault 7: no power at all

Work through the cheap causes first, in order.

  • Try a different socket. Sockets fail more often than people expect.
  • Check the fuse in the plug. This is the single most common cause of a mains appliance that suddenly does nothing.
  • Look over the cable for damage, as above.
  • If all three are clear, the fault is internal.

One thing to rule out straight away: the Airwrap has no battery. It is mains powered and runs from the cable. Searches for Airwrap battery replacement come up often and they are almost always a mix-up with a cordless Dyson hair tool. There is no battery to change.

What you can fix yourself in five minutes

  • Clean the filter, cage and mesh. Repairing these components fixes more Airwrap complaints than anything else.
  • Pull the hair out of the barrels and brushes.
  • Change the plug fuse.
  • Try a different socket.
  • Reseat the filter cage until it snaps into place.

None of that needs tools, parts or a repairer. If one of them fixes your machine, you have saved yourself a repair bill, which is the point.

When to stop

The Airwrap is a mains appliance with a heating element and a motor running at very high speed. That puts a firm limit on sensible home repair.

Stop and get it looked at if the cable or casing is damaged, if the machine has been dropped hard, if there is any smell of burning, or if a red light survives a proper filter clean. Do not open the handle. There is nothing user-serviceable inside it, and opening it will void any cover you have.

Repair or replace

Plainly, because it saves everyone time. A blocked filter is not worth paying anyone for. You can clean it yourself.

An attachment fault is usually solved by replacing the attachment, not the machine. Cable damage, motor noise and a persistent red light are all worth repairing. A fixed-price repair is a fraction of a replacement, and the machine goes back to working properly.

Replacing makes more sense when an older machine has already had several faults, and the repair cost is close to the price of a new one. If that’s the case, we’ll tell you. It is also better than another appliance in landfill if it can be kept going.

Questions we get asked

Why does my Airwrap keep cutting out?

Almost always restricted airflow from a blocked filter. The machine shuts down to protect itself. A full filter clean, mesh included, clears most cases.

Does the Dyson Airwrap have a battery?

No. It is mains powered and runs from the cable. If it has no power, look at the socket, the plug fuse, the cable, or an internal fault.

Can I replace the Airwrap motor myself?

No. The handle is not designed to be opened by the owner, there are no user-serviceable parts inside, and it is a mains appliance. Motor work is a workshop job.

My red light will not go off. What now?

Clean the filter properly first, cage and mesh both. If the light survives that, it is an internal fault. Dyson’s own guidance is to contact them, which is right if you are in warranty. Out of warranty, book it in with us.

Is it worth repairing an Airwrap?

Usually. A fixed-price repair is a fraction of a replacement. The exception is a machine that is old and has already had several faults.

How do I stop it happening again?

Clean the filter on a routine rather than waiting for the light, keep the attachments clear, and store the cable loosely rather than tightly wrapped. Making an Airwrap last covers the rest.

Do I need to be near you?

No. We collect and return across the UK.
