Is your steam iron back-to-school ready?

Dyson gives the Airwrap a two-year guarantee covering parts and labour from the date of purchase. That is stated in Dyson’s own operating manuals, and it is the figure to work from. What it covers is narrower than most people assume, and the exclusions catch Airwrap owners out. This guide sets out what is covered, what is not, and what your options are on the day it expires.

TL;DR

  • Two years, parts and labour, from the date of purchase.
  • Covers faults caused by defective materials or workmanship.
  • Does not cover normal wear and tear. Dyson lists filters as an example of a wear part.
  • Does not cover accidental damage, misuse, or damage from non-genuine parts.
  • You need proof of purchase before any work is carried out under it.

What the guarantee covers

Dyson’s guarantee terms cover repair or replacement of your machine, at Dyson’s discretion, where it is found to be defective due to faulty materials or workmanship. That is the core of it. A component that failed because it was badly made or badly assembled is Dyson’s problem to solve, for two years from purchase.

Note the wording: repair or replacement, at their discretion. You do not get to choose which.

What it does not cover

This is where Airwrap owners tend to get caught, so it is worth reading properly.

Exclusion  What it means in practice
Normal wear and tear  Dyson gives examples including fuses, belts, brush bars, batteries and filters. Parts expected to wear out are not covered.
Accidental damage  Dropped machines, knocks, impact damage.
Misuse or negligent operation  Using the machine other than as intended, or against the instructions.
Non-genuine parts  Damage caused by parts or accessories that are not Dyson’s.
External causes  Damage from transit or power surges.

The filter exclusion matters more than the others, because a blocked filter is the most common issue. If your machine is cutting out and the cause is a clogged filter, that is not a guarantee claim in or out of warranty. It is a ten-minute job.

Which is good news, not bad. Cleaning it properly costs nothing.

You will need proof of purchase

Dyson requires proof of delivery or purchase before any work is carried out under the guarantee. Find the receipt, the order confirmation or the retailer’s record before you ring anyone.

If the machine was a gift, you need whoever bought it to dig out the paperwork. Worth doing early rather than at the point of a fault.

How to tell whether you are still covered

Two years from the date of purchase, not the date you first used it and not the date of manufacture. Check the receipt first. If you registered the machine with Dyson, the record will be in your account with them. If you bought through a retailer, their order history is usually the fastest route to a date.  If you cannot establish a purchase date, assume you are out of warranty and plan accordingly.

What to do while you are still covered

Use the cover. It is the cheapest route by a distance, and it is what you paid for. Clean the filter first, because Dyson’s own guidance on a red light is to clean the filter before contacting them, and a filter fault is excluded anyway. If the light survives a full clean, ring the Dyson Helpline. That is the correct call in warranty and we would tell you the same.  We repair out of warranty. If you are still covered, we are not the right first call.

What happens when it runs out

The machine does not change on the day the guarantee expires. Your options do. Dyson will still help, but you are now paying their prices for a repair or a replacement machine. That is the point at which an independent out-of-warranty repair becomes worth looking at.

We repair Dyson Airwraps for a fixed £56, with a 90-day guarantee on the repair and UK collection and return included. The full breakdown is here.

There is also a category of fault that the guarantee never covered and never would have. A dropped machine, a damaged cable, a worn attachment fitting. Those are repairable whether you are within two years or not, and paying for a repair is usually far cheaper than replacing the machine.

Repair rights beyond the guarantee

A manufacturer guarantee sits on top of your consumer rights rather than replacing them. If a machine was faulty when you bought it, you may have a claim against the retailer regardless of what the guarantee says. We are appliance repairers, not solicitors, so take advice on the detail. The practical point is that the end of the two years is not the end of every option.

Questions we get asked

How long is the Dyson Airwrap warranty?

Two years from the date of purchase, covering parts and labour, as stated in Dyson’s operating manuals.

Is the filter covered under warranty?

No. Dyson lists filters among the wear parts excluded, such as fuses and batteries.

Does the warranty cover a dropped Airwrap?

No. Accidental damage is excluded. It is usually still repairable, though, so it is worth getting a price before replacing the machine.

Do I have to register to get the guarantee?

The guarantee terms require proof of purchase rather than registration, but registering makes the record easier to find later. Check your position with Dyson.

My Airwrap failed just after two years. Anything I can do?

Yes. An out-of-warranty repair is a fraction of the price of a new product. You may also have consumer rights against the retailer depending on the circumstances, which is worth taking advice on.

Can you repair a machine still under Dyson warranty?

We can, but you probably should not ask us to. Use the cover you have. We are out-of-warranty specialists, and we tell you if you are still covered.

What is not worth claiming for?

Anything caused by a blocked filter, because it is excluded and because you can fix it yourself in ten minutes. Not sure what is actually wrong yet? The complete Airwrap faults guide works through the symptoms in order.
